T-Men and Raw Deal, two Anthony Mann film noirs, have been packaged together by the
Roan Group in an enjoyable gatefold jacket highlighted by an interesting essay by
filmmaker Max Alan Collins.
T-Men is a wonderful example of elegant, low-budget filmmaking. The
director/cinematographer combination of Anthony Mann and John Alton give this treasury
department docu-drama an elegant look, creating a world of mystery through imaginative
camera angles and dramatic lighting. Dennis O’Keefe plays Treasury Agent Dennis
O’Brien whose assignment is to infiltrate a mob dealing dirty currency. Along the way
his partner is exposed and killed with little ceremony. But, O’Brien survives in a
beauty of a shoot-out on board a less than savory ocean tanker.
Director Mann delivers this unflinching script with its hard edge in tact. There are
few embellishments to the straight ahead story-telling technique. Mann cuts with economy
keeping an expeditious pace. O’Keefe is comfortable in the role of O’Brien
creating an easy-going authenticity. Charles McGraw has some menacing moments and Wallace
Ford sweats beads of oil as "Schemer."
Raw Deal, made a year before T-Men, is more classic noir. Once again, Dennis
O’Keefe is director Mann’s star, this time playing escaped criminal Joe Sullivan
looking to revenge a double-cross. Sullivan has a waiting car outside the prison driven by
girl friend Pat Regan, played with an effective world weariness by Claire Trevor. In the
best of prison escape traditions, things go awry and Sullivan is forced to improvise,
taking legal aide Ann Martin hostage. With police hot on Sullivan’s trail, sadistic
boss Rick Coyle(Raymond Burr), who framed Sullivan, dispatches his henchman Fantail(John
Ireland) to kill Sullivan in case the police don’t get him.
Once again collaborating with director of photography John Alton, Mann delivers a black
and white film composed in interesting angles and shadows of varying intensity. Mann sets
his characters on a one way road to nowhere in this definitive noir effort.
Composing the music for both these films, B-movie specialist Paul Sawtell provides
workmanlike scoring most notable for the use of the theremin as the background
accompaniment to Claire Trevor’s voice-over narration in Raw Deal.
There are some faint scratches While the images for these films are overall in very
good shape, the sound has some significant lapses. Toward the end of disc one, an annoying
buzz mars T-Men and continues into the beginning of side two. Raw Deal has it’s own
annoying sound aberration, a low level popping. If you find this film too grainy, try
dropping down the sharpness control. The jacket mistakenly credits John Ireland as Rick
Coyle instead of Raymond Burr. |
