Ridicule exudes sophistication. It presents a fascinating picture of the court of Louis
XVI, the intrigue, jealousies and love affairs revolving in and around Versailles.
Covering similar territory to Dangerous Liaisons, this period piece develops more
naturally with more humanity.
Nobleman Ponceludon de Malavoy comes to the court of Louis XVI seeking funds for an
irrigation project to rid his native province of swamp related maladies. The only way he
can hope to reach the Kings ear is by attracting his attention is participating in
the courts ritual exchange of wit. Through a chance meeting with the Marquis de
Bellegarde, a savvy member of the Kings court, Malavoy is tutored in the art of wit
and court intrigue. A quick learn, he quickly makes his mark in court and attracts the
attention of Madame de Blayac, a connected lady with a healthy appetite for sex. Along the
way he falls in love with Bellegardes daughter, the virtuous Mathilde, conquers the
court and gets his audience with Louis, suffers at the lash of court wit and loses his
love. Fortunately, love conquers all and the French Revolution takes care of the rest.
Patrice Leconte, whose Monsieur Hire was an interesting study in obsessive perversion,
composes wonderful images in for a totally different world in Ridicule. Combining the
witty script with elegant photography, Leconte weaves an entertaining tale. Set design is
fantastic. Costumes, buildings, gardens, even plates of food evoke the period with
authenticity.
Charles Berling is a sincere Malavoy and Jean Rochfort brings a world weariness to
Bellegarde. Fanny Ardant appears to be having a grand old time as the lascivious Madame de
Blayac and fresh face Judith Godreche is a beauty as Mathilde.
It appears that low light interiors are the order of the day in Ridicule. They provide
a natural look for the time period, but they also put a strain on the film stock. The
result is a grainy film which transfers into a grainy laser disc. Grain is exacerbated on
laser, but Ridicule achieves a reasonable balance between sharpness, light and grain. The
yellow English subtitles are easy to read over the picture. Music from Antoine Duhamel is
recorded with lovely transparency. |
