Who is She? A wide eyed Nigel Bruce playing
adventurer Holly asks this question and her response is: "I am yesterday...and today
and tomorrow. I am sorrow and longing and hope unfulfilled....I am She Who Must Be
Obeyed. I am ...I." Helen Gahagen as She delivers the lines with the florid
sweep of a movie serial immortal. This H. Rider Haggard story fits perfectly into the
serial genre, although She is a feature. It takes little imagination to envision
the palace ruled by She in a Flash Gordon episode
Randolph Scott, square-jawed hero that he is, plays Leo,
who, with associate Holly, set off to find the secret of immortality hidden somewhere in
the frigid mountains of eastern Russia. Leo picks up a date on the way and Helen
Mack’s innocent winds up at the edge of sacrificial death before She is
transformed into the reality of her ancient years.
The sets are a lot of fun, as is the dated acting. Some of
the ceremonies look like they were choreographed by Busby Berkeley or at least Mel Brooks.
Max Steiner’s score beautifully reaches the heights of the enormous palace rafters. I
could have sworn I saw those cave people in History of the World Part I.
There is some evidence of age to the source material for
this 1935 adventure film, but it is mostly very clean.. There are a number of soft scenes.
Black and white contrasts are reasonably good . The mono sound hold up very well. This is
highly enjoyable disc presentation. She is the kind of movie that can be lots of
fun. Take the trip to immortality. |
