springs to life in beautiful black and white. The 1949 film stars Broderick Crawford as a Louisiana
political demagogue a la Huey Long. Great picture, great performance. Academy Award winner as Best
Picture in 1949.
Get set for a Muppet
invasion. A double helping of Muppet mischief arrives via The Muppet Movie
and The Muppets Take Mahattan (6/5/01) from Columbia. The 1980
Muppet debut and it d1985 follow-up are being released anamorphic widescreen. Are you listening

Istvan Szabo's sprawling
drama depicting three generations of a Hungarian Jewish family Sunshine
(5/8/01) bows on DVD from Paramount. The 1999 film stars Ralph Fiennes as the family
scion. The three hour film is delivered anamorphic widescreen.
The brilliant horror film Repulsion (4/24/01) is set for DVD release from Koch Video. Roman
Polanski's 1965 film stars Catherine Deneuve. Hopefully, newcomer Koch will deliver the goods in
frightfully good condition.

Paramount in Donovan's Reef (6/5/01). John Wayne and Lee Marvin
battle it out in this 1963 comic South Seas romp. Anamorphic widescreen.
Director Mike Nichols gets
behind the microphone to share his experiences in an audio commentary for the new special edition
of Catch 22 (5/22/01) coming from Paramount. Steven Soderbergh
joins Nichols in a look at Joseph Heller's classic comic tale of the madness of war starring Alan
Arkin, Jon Voight and Art Garfunkel. Yosarian, are you there?
Outstanding war drama The Bridges of Toko-Ri (5/22/01) debuts on DVD from Paramount in a
full frame edition. William Holden stars in the 1954 drama with excellent support from Grace Kelly,
Fredric March and Mickey Rooney.
Paramount delivers another
war movie with the 1965 In Harm's Way (5/22/01). John Wayne
leads an all-star cast through the pacific ocean drama as the US mounts an answer to the Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbor. Anamorphic widescreen 2.35. Black and White.

Encounters of the Third Kind (5/29/01) is given special edition treatment from Columbia
with an added 101 documentary about the film and numerous deleted scenes. Steven Spielberg's
science fiction favorite is presented in its third and presumably final incarnation of 137 minutes,
and de rigueur anamorphic widescreen 2.35.
Michael Dorsey is desperate
enough for an acting gig to transform himself into Tootsie (5/29/01).
Sydney Pollack's 1982 film is a hilarious cross dressing romp featuring terrific performances from
Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange and Charles Durning. Coming from Columbia anamorphic widescreen 2.35.

At long last I can replace my
rotted laser disc of Sweet Smell of Success (6/19/01). Directed
by Alexander Mackendrick in 1957, the searing show business drama stars Burt Lancaster and Tony
Curtis in unforgettable roles. Script by one time gossip columnist assistant Ernest Lehman crackles
with malice. MGM release's the black and white film 1.66 widescreen.
Melanie Griffith made an
indelible screen mark with her free-spirited portrayal in the 1986 Something
Wild (6/5/01). MGM is releasing Jonathan Demme's film anamorphic widescreen 1.85
Tony Richardson directs
Laurence Olivier as Archie Rice, the vaudeville song and dance man on the edge in the 1960 black
and white film The Entertainer (6/19/01). Widescreen 1.66 from
MGM.
Beautifully evoking the
innocence of childhood, John Boorman's remembrance of England at War makes it's DVD debut in
widescreen 1.66 from MGM. The 1987 Hope and Glory (6/5/01)
drama stars Sarah Miles and includes a wonderful performance by Ian Bannen.

Fran Kubelik holds the key to
C.C. Baxter's heart, but Baxter owns the key to success through boss Sheldrake's influence. The Apartment (6/19/01) is Billy Wilder's smart 1960 comic drama
starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. Not to be missed in anamorphic widescreen 2.35 from MGM
The next splash you hear may
be the sound of a big whale landing on DVD. Gregory Peck stiffens his resolve as Captain Ahab, the
man with a mission in Moby Dick (6/19/010). Directed by John
Huston, the 1956 film is presented full frame from MGM.
Nigel Hawthorne chews up the scenery in The Madness of King George (6/5/01), director
Nicholas Hytner's film debut. The beautifully acted 1994 film features sumptuous production design.
MGM is releasing the film enhanced for 16 x 9 anamorphic widescreen 1.85.

Many moons ago the award
winning foreign film Pelle the Conqueror (4/1/01) was announced
for a laser disc release. It never made it. Now, Anchor Bay is releasing the film in an anamorphic
edition on DVD. Starring Max Van Sydow in an Oscar© nominated performance, the 1988 film
explores the complexities of a father/son relationship.
One of the first of the
successful sword and sandal flicks, The Sword and the Sorcerer (4/17/01)
slashes its way onto DVD. Anchor Bay delivers the goods 16 x 9 anamorphic.
In a special edition from
Anchor Bay, director Lizzie Borden adds audio commentary to her ground-breaking 1986 feature film Working Girls (4/17/01). A look into prostitution in the fast lane
from a feminist perspective.
Hulot arrives on DVD as part
of the Criterion Collection. Mr. Hulot's Holiday (4/24/01) is a
breezily funny silent look at a Frenchman's antic beach interlude. Jacque Tati mines and mimes the
material for brilliant comic effect in the 1953 black and white classic. Hulot returns to cause
havoc in the wake of his jaunty stride again in Mon Oncle (4/24/01),
Tati's 1958 follow-up comedy.
Blacklisted American director
Jules Dassin moved to Paris to continue making movies and the result was the highly successful 1954
French caper film Rififi (4/24/01). From the Criterion
Collection in beautiful black and white.
Director Steven Soderbergh's
2000 film Traffic (5/29/01) arrives on DVD from USA Films in 16
x 9 anamorphic 1.85. Michael Douglas is the drug czar and Benecio Del Toro a laid back investigator
in this exploration of the drug world.

Paramount is letting some
Audrey Hepburn out of the vault on April 10, 2000. One of
Hepburn's signature films, Sabrina (1954), features the gamin
actress at her most charming. With rakish William Holden and dour Humphrey Bogart chasing her
skirts under the direction of Billy Wilder. Not a bad combo.
Funny Face (1957) pairs Audrey with Fred Astaire in a musical
directed by Stanley Donen. Maybe a touch of Pygmalion before My Fair Lady.
Maybe not the best of Holden and Hepburn, Paris When it Sizzles (1957)
fails to recapture the innocent chemistry generated by Sabrina. Too bad. Audrey in Paris is usually
a sound bet.
Now the question is when does Roman Holiday (1953) breeze out onto DVD on a purring
motor scooter?

celebrations in suburban Los Angeles. Beat the drumsticks for this 2000 release from Trimark?
Miss
Congeniality (5/1/01) made me laugh hard and long for the most part. The welcome Warners
DVD special edition features audio commentaries from star Sandra Bullock and writer Marc Lawrence
and a second from director Daniel Petrie.
Sean Connery may have turned
seventy last year, but the actor has not lost any of the screen magic that made him one of the most
reliable stars of Hollywood. Finding Forester (4/24/01) casts
Connery as a recluse writer whose one only book made him a legend. A young urban black youth
unlocks the writer's door and in the process finds his true self. Some sentimental tendencies are
overpowered by intelligent writing.

commentary by Guillaume Depardieu and outtakes are included. Pola get the anamorphic widescreen
treatment. The 1986 Carax film Mauvais Sang
(4/10/01) stars Julie Delpy, Michel Piccoli, and Juliette Binoche.
The 1984 debut feature film of Carax, Boy Meet Girl

Elizabeth Taylor regally
reclining across the widescreen as full dress Cleopatra is an enduring Hollywood image. Now the
1963 Hollywood mega-film Cleopatra (4/3/01) sweeps onto DVD
dressed by Fox in special edition garments. Included with the new anamorphic enhanced for 16 x
9 widescreen 2.35 transfer are audio commentary by actor Martin Landau, the director's sons
Chris and Tom Mankiewicz, and producer Jack Brodsky. The 3 DVD set also features two documentaries,
one made in 1963 and one in 2000, productions stills, costume sketches, concept art; archival
footage of New York and Hollywood premieres.
Kurt Russell doing John Wayne
under the baton of director John Carpenter is one of the underrated treats of the eighties.The 1986 Big Trouble in Little China (5/22/01) presaged the video embrace of

Superman
times four is coming to DVD from Warner. All four of the Superman features are being
released in anamorphic 16 x 9 enhanced with Superman: The Movie (4/1/01)
delivered as a special edition featuring audio commentary, screen tests, eight additional minutes
added to the film, and more. Warner is even offering a Superman Collection package.
John Wayne sobers up Dean
Martin, teaches Ricky Nelson a thing or two as Walter Brennan cackles away in Howard Hawks' feisty
western Rio Bravo (5/8/01). Warner is releasing the 1969 film
anamorphic widescreen enhanced for 16 x 9.
The
Mummy: The Ultimate Edition(4/24/01) is getting unwrapped in a DVD special edition
treatment from Universal. Coinciding with the The Mummy Returns debut in May, this chock
full special edition includes two audio commentaries and everything you ever wanted to know about
making The Mummy.

edition. Details of the special edition has not yet been released. The 1956 film is sheer
joy.
The powerful 1969 documentary
from Marcel Ophuls, The Sorrow and the Pity (4/17/01) is being
released by Image Entertainment. Ophuls chronicles the war years in France with laser precision.
Movie lovers are getting John
Sayles' outstanding baseball movie Eight Men Out (5/8/01) from
MGM. The fascinating story of the "Black Sox" scandal gets a heart-felt rendering.
Robert Altman's entertaining
adaptation of Arthur Kopit's great play Buffalo Bill and the Indians
(5/8/01) is coming from MGM. Paul Newman is the grand-standing showman and Burt
Lancaster gets quality screen time as chronicler Ned Buntline.
Burnt by the desert sun, Burt
Lancaster plays Massai, a independent warrior in Apache
(5/8/01) The 1954 film is one of four collaborations between star Lancaster and director
Robert Aldrich.

The crack of the baseball bat
has a magic ring to it in Barry Levinson's excellent 1984 adaptation of the Bernard Malamud novel The Natural (4/3/01) arriving on DVD from Columbia. exclusive
documentary is included in the package.
Columbia is also releasing
another Barry Levinson gem, Avalon (3/13/01), the director's
remembrance of Baltimore past. Levinson gets terrific performances from his ensemble cast in the
1990 film.

There is nothing laid back
about the directing style of Lars Von Trier. The director's latest, Dancer
in the Dark (3/20/01), a musical that taps into classic Hollywood musicals with a
touch of Dennis Potter is getting a special edition DVD release from New Line. Audio commentaries
includes observations of the director, choreographers, producer and star. Alternate scenes and two
documentaries make this a top notch DVD package.
Two of young director
Harmony Korine's films, Gummo (3/20/01) and Julien Donkey-Boy (3/20/01) are making it to DVD through New Line.
Gummo, his 1997 debut film, includes an animated photo gallery with commentary by the director. His
1999 sophomore film Julien Donkey-Boy includes two deleted scenes and a documentary.

the comic strip Tank Girl (4/10/01) stars Lori Petty storming
through the futuristic world through the imaginative direction of Rachel Talalay. MGM gives the

Steve McQueen is a ship's
engineer of a different order in Robert Wise's adaptation of the Richard McKenna novel set in turn

David Lean's 1984 sincere but

his 1992 takes at swat at film censorship will examining the sexual peccadilloes of a Canadian

One of those films that
played the art house circuit forever, King of Hearts (4/10/01)
stars Alan Bates as one of the inmates in French insane asylum. Philippe de Broca's film is a
welcome addition to the DVD catalogue. Widescreen from MGM.

Great News for movie fans and
DVD fans. Columbia is releasing a two disc DVD special edition of Lawrence
of Arabia (4/3/01). Along with the restored film, there will be an exclusive
documentary, four featurettes, a conversation with Stephen Spielberg and newsreel footage. No
commentary tracks have been announced. Anamorphic 16 x 9 enhanced widescreen.
After the audacious debut
film Pi, Darren Aronofsky follows up with a hard look into the soul of drugs filtered through the
story-telling talents of Hubert Selby, Jr. Set in a decaying Coney Island, the film stars Jared
Leto and Ellen Burstyn. Requiem for a Dream 3/20/01) gets the
special edition treatment from Artisan, including audio commentary from Aronofsky, a making of and
deleted scenes.

Girlfight
(3/27/01), Karyn Kusama's debut film that opened to high praise last year gets an
enhanced for 16 x 9 widescreen anamorphic release from Columbia. This film chronicles the rise of a
young woman boxer with some romance to keep the girl on her feet.
Charlie's
Angels (3/27/01) got more critical respect than you'd expect considering the source
material, but the appealing trio of stars helped make the goofy film a box office blockbuster.
Columbia is giving the film a special edition DVD release. Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy
Lui provide the action and charm.

are coming from Warners. Defending Your Life (4/3/01), Brooks'
1991 satire on Heaven, stars Brooks and Meryl Streep, with notable supporting work from Rip Torn

Brooks 1985 hilarious road movie stars Brooks with Airplane's Julie Haggerty, assaying America

A new meaning for the garden,
writer Jerzy Kosinski's novel is translated impeccably to the screen by director Hal Ashby. Peter
Sellers is brilliantly simple, handling Shirley MacLaine's ample appetites with hilarious élan.

and The Seven Year Itch(1955).
The cast and crew of 2000's Bedazzled(3/13/01) get to make some devilish observations on the making
of the film in two audio commentaries in this special edition from Fox. Deleted scenes and a making
of are included in the package. Brendan Fraser stars as the lovelorn nerd and Elizabeth Hurley

Too bad they couldn't get
this one out for Christmas. Earth to Dudley. Cary Grant stars as an angel in the beautifully shot
black and white fantasy The Bishop's Wife (3/6/01). MGM is
releasing the 1947 film.
Vera
Cruz 3/20/01) is an entertaining Western but plays a bit stiff today. The 1954 film
features Gary Cooper fending off the rambunctious villainy of Burt Lancaster. MGM is giving the
film an anamorphic widescreen 2.00 release.
Get ready for some grand
mud-slinging fun when Support Your Local Sheriff (3/20/01) is
released by MGM in anamorphic widescreen 1.85. James Garner is the guy with a badge and a rye sense
of humor in this broad 1968 comedy.

interesting feature, Vincent Ward's The Navigator (2/26/01).
The 1988 films won numerous Australian Awards but has never had a high end video release.

Before Anthony Hopkins cooked
Hannibal Lector to delicious perfection, Brian Cox formed a chilling ice sculpture of the character
in Michael Mann's fine thriller Manhunter(1/30/01). Anchor Bay
is releasing the 1986 film on DVD in two versions, a number limited special 2 disc edition that
includes the theatrical release and a three minute longer director's cut. On the same day, Anchor
Bay, is releasing a single platter with the theatrical release. Both editions contain two
featurettes on the film.

With strikingly evocative
images of 1950s small town America, director Pat O'Connor creates a sometimes successful canvas of
love and ambition in Inventing the Abbotts (3/13/01), coming on
DVD from Fox.
Columbia is releasing the
fascinating but emotionally cold film about pianist Glenn Gould 32 Short
Films About Glenn Gould (2/20/01). Very unusual filmmaking in this 1993 film punctuated
by the strong classical chords of Gould's piano.

fans reason to expedite the calendar. On March 6, 2001, the
studio is releasing ten of the suspense master's films to coincide with the release of the newly
spiffed up Rear Window(1954). Included in the massive Hitchcock
attack are Saboteur (1942), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Rope (1948), The
Trouble with Harry (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Torn Curtain (1966) Topaz (1969),
Frenzy (1972), Family Plot (1976) The studio is also releasing two Best of Hitchcock
collections which include a selection of feature films and some bonus episodes from Alfred
Hitchcock Presents. Get ready to camp out in the home theater. Huzzahs to Universal!
