One
of those films that slips in and out of small
art houses, Atom Egoyan's Felicia's
Journey(5/16/00) makes it's
DVD debut from Artisan in a special editon
featuring the observations of director Egoyan. Arsinee
Khanjian
(Mrs. Egoyan) and
Bob Hoskins star.
Just
another couple of weeks before the finely
crafted thriller, The
Bone Collector(3/15/00) debuts
in a special editon from universal. Phillip
Noyce provides the commentary and Denzel
Washington and Angelina Jolie the star
chemistry.
Alfred
Hitchcock's devious horror tale, The
Birds(3/28/00), is being
packaged as a special editon by Universal. The
DVD includes a documentary, All About the Birds,
star Tippi Hedren's (Melanie Griffith's
mom) screen test, story boards and a deleted
scene.

Looks
like action/comedy fans are in store for a treat
come September as Columbia is releasing Men
in Black(9/5/00)in a special editon.
Look for seamless special effects and a Dolby
Digital spectacular.
Are
you ready to enter the portal? USA Home
Entertainment is delivering Being
John Malkovich(5/2/00) to DVD the
splendidly original film directed by Spike Jonze
and starring John Cusack, Cameron Diaz,
Catherine Keener and, yes, John Malkovich is
guaranteed to titillate.
One
of the worst reviewed films of the year, Flawless(4/18/00)
is being released by MGM. Joel
Schumacher's irrationally lambasted eccentric
flick is actually quite enjoyable with a great,
big, performance from Indie man Phillip Seymour
Hoffman as a drag queen who Robert De Niro finds
"irresistible."
Small
films that disappear from theaters fasting than
a bag of popcorn are often very good. Mother
Night5/20/00), from the Kurt Vonnegut
novel, stars Nick Nolte as an American spying on
the Nazis from a high profile podium. Check
Keith Gordon's film out courtesy of New Line.
You won't regret it.

Agnes
Varda makes films to the beat of her own drum.
Cleo
from 5 to 7(4/18/00)is the
film that made her reputation and established
her as an individual film force. Now Criterion
is releasing two of her better know films, the
aforementioned 1962 Cleo and Vagabond4/18/00),
the story of a girl on an aimless road.
Paramount's
going Presley in May. Four of the hip-shifting
singer's films arrive on DVD on 3/21/00, G.
I. Blues, Blue Hawaii, Roustabout, and King
Creole. All are being given
the anamorphic widescreen treatment with the
exception of G. I. Blues.

David
O. Russell's terrific and idiosyncratic Three
Kings(4/11/00) is set for a
packed DVD special edition release from Warner.
The film did less than scintillating theatrical
box office and hopefully the video release will
make up for that irrational showing. Stars
George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Spike Jonz and
Ice Cube get more than they bargained for
searching for Saddam's hidden treasure.
Get
ready to blast off with
Galaxy Quest(5/2/00)set to
make May a month for hilarious Universal Home
Video voyages. The Star Trek take-off is
likely to flood space with the sound of
uncontrollable laughter as the former stars of a
cult scifi television series are recruited for
duty outside their usual stage. Tim Allen
provides smooth ego alongside a very funny
Sigourney Weaver.
Will
the Cradle
Will Rock(5/16/00) find a big
DVD audience? Disney is releasing Tim Robbins'
film about Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater.
Sweet
films often get the short shrift. Mystery,
Alaska(5//9/00) suffered an
icy reception in theaters, but it's a pretty
good little Cinderella story about a town
dedicated to it's amateur hockey team. Directed
by Austin Powers' Jay Roach, the film stars the
chameleon-like Russell Crowe.

A
widescreen anamorphic release is on tap for
Michael Mann's The
Insider(4/11/00) from Disney.
This is the best movie of 1999. Sure hope it
gets a great box office on video.
Miramax
is issuing Music
of the Heart(4/25/00) in a
full-blown special edition, including audio
commentary from director Wes Craven and deleted
scenes, plus much more.
Lawrence
Kasdan's eccentric comedy,
Mumford(4/11/00),
gets an anamorphic release from Buena Vista.

Three
cheers for Seven
Days in May(5/16/ 00)making it
to DVD from Warner. The intelligent 1964
thriller by John Frankenheimer boasts both Kirk
Douglas and Burt Lancaster in their primes.
Scary stuff.
Roland
Joffe has made some strong films and the best of
them is the 1974The
Killing Fields(5/16/00). An
anamorphic transfer of this fine film from
Warner makes a great addition to the DVD
catalog.
From
Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, On
the Town(5/2/00) is a joyous
musical ode to New York. The 1949 film dances
onto to DVD from Warner.
Before
Stallone was Stallone, he had a juicy role in a
little film called The
Lords of Flatbush(4/25/00). An
independent film before independent films became
popular. The 1974 is another anamorphic release
from Columbia.

By
the time Fox releases
Boys Don't Cry(4/18/00), the
Academy Awards will already have doled out the
precious statues. Will Hilary Swank be a winner?
She already is with the stunning portrayal of
Brandon Teena is the hard-hitting first film
from Kimberly Pierce.
Written,
produced and starring by Robert Mitchum, Thunder
Road(4/25/00)coming from MGM,
is packed with action and ambiance. Mitchum
makes moonshine and trouble. Solid 1958 flick
from the get-go.
Movie
star Marcello Mastroianni, who passed away in
1996, is the subject of a 1997
three-hour-twenty-minute documentary from Fox
Lorber, Marcello
Mastroianni: I Remember3/21/00)

Bogie,
Bogie and more Bogie. Don't forget to look for The
Maltese Falcon(2/15/00) Arriving
on the same day is The
Big Sleep(2/15/00) The Big
Sleep contains two separate version of the
feature. Key
Largo(2/15/00) is the third
outstanding Bogart DVD coming from Warners.
William
Holden bares his chest in Picnic(4/18/00).
Kim Novak and Rosalind Russell are hot and
bothered. Columbia delivers in anamorphic 2.35
widescreen and full screen.
