Check back frequently for many announcements of recommended DVDs. Dates in parenthesis are scheduled releases. May 30, 2000 For those of you who have never experienced the dark acid humor of W. C. Fields, Criterion's new DVD release of 1940's The Bank Dick (7/18/00) could be the treat you were waiting for. Fields is a hen-pecked bank guard who becomes an inadvertent hero. Here's hoping the film elements are up to Criterion standards. Also being released on the same date are Six Short Films featuring the comic genius of Fields. The first brilliant burst of Fellini magic, Variety Lights (7/18/00) makes a DVD debut from Criterion. The 1950 film stars Guilietta Masina and focuses on Fellini's affection for off-beat and fringe characters of society. May 20, 2000 Zhang Yi-Mou, China's brilliant director, returns to contemporary mode with Not One Less (8/22/00), his 1999 film set in a remote mountain village. The DVD is from Columbia. You can look forward to an interesting experience as a 13-year-old is hired as a substitute teacher. Don't expect the heat of Ju Dou or Raise the Red Lantern. Mifune (8/22/00) is an imaginative comedy from Denmark that focuses on the importance of family and a fascination for Akira Kurosawa's favored actor. Check out another interesting DVD entry from Columbia coming in full frame. Warners digs into the great MGM catalog for They Were Expendable (5/23/00)), the outstanding 1945 John Ford war movie starring John Wayne and Robert Montgomery. Plenty of good splashes from these PT boats. May 15, 2000 Another in the string of eccentric comic melodramas from Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, All About My Mother (7/1//00), makes it to the small shiny disc from Columbia. The 1999 film stars Marisa Paredes and Penelope Cruz. Anamorphic widescreen and English subtitles. You might want to grab a gander at the 1995 Because of You (7/18/00) from New Horizons, a sweetly sentimental Japanese film about a Japanese woman journeying to New York to revisit a piece of her past. May 13, 2000 One of the best courtroom dramas of all time, Anatomy of a Murder (7/11/00) arrives on DVD from Columbia in glorious black and white. James Stewart uses all his down home defense guile to avoid the sharp prosecution thrusts of George C. Scott in the 1959 directed by Otto Preminger. May 12, 2000 Paramount presents the 1975 Nashville (6/27/00) on DVD in a special edition including audio commentary and an interview with director Robert Altman. The anamorphic widescreen 2.35 transfer should present the rambling Altman vision to grand effect. May 11, 2000 The rambling follow-up film to Boogie Nights from director Paul Thomas Anderson, Magnolia (8/29/00), makes its DVD debut from New Line with deleted scenes and a full-length making of documentary. All three plus hours of the 1999 film is presented in 2.35 anamorphic widescreen. At long last, you can stop Searching for Bobby Fischer (7/11/00) on DVD as the fine 1993 film about a chess prodigy arrives from Paramount in an anamorphic widescreen edition. Ben Kingsley and Laurence Fishburne present varied angles of the chess board to young Max Pomeranc. May 10, 2000 Ever since Dr. No, Ursula Andress has been a delight to contemplate. In the 1965 The 10th Victim (6/20/00), she's part of the futuristic population control game. Marcello Mastroianni makes pursuit complete coming courtesy of Anchor Bay in anamorphic widescreen. Ron Shelton found the perfect directing rhythms with this buddy sports movie, White Man Can't Jump (7/25/00). Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes shoot the hoops and hustle baskets in this cool 1992 comedy from Fox. May 8, 2000 Joe Pesci takes on the forces of the South with his courtroom debut in the 1992 My Cousin Vinny (7/25/00) from Fox. Marissa Tomei, the beneficiary of Pesci's legal expertise, was the surprise Oscar winner for supporting actress. Before L.A. Confidential and The River Wild, director Curtis Hanson honed his suspense skills on the 1987 thriller The Bedroom Window (6/6/00). French actress Isabelle Huppert is the femme fatale Steve Guttenberg is panting after. From Anchor Bay May 5, 2000 Getting to listen to both director Alan Parker and writer Frank McCourt on the audio commentary for Angela's Ashes (7/18/00) should provide an extra layer of pleasure from this well-received 1999 drama detailing the author's impoverished youth in Ireland. May 4, 2000 If the tears my eleven-year-old daughter released in the theater is any indication, My Dog Skip (7/11/00) will make an excellent DVD for family viewing. Skip hits the street from Warner replete with audio commentary and deleted scenes. Anything with Kirk Douglas in it still holds for me. Diamonds (7/18/00) arrives from Buena Vista with Douglas playing an ex-prize-fighter. Did he draw on memories of Champion (1949) for inspiration? May 2, 2000 The film that made the reputation of the Merchant/Ivory filmmaking team, A Room with a View (7/4/00) is a welcome addition to the DVD catalog. Daniel Day-Lewis and Julian Sands and Helena Bonham-Carter explore the delights of youth and Florence. The too often neglected gem from Federico Fellini, Il Bidone (7/18/00) is arriving on DVD courtesy of Image. The comic buffoonery is led by American tough guy Broderick Crawford. May 1, 2000 At long last you get to go in the water again. Jaws(7/11/00) makes it's long awaited DVD in special edition sharkskin from Universal, including a making of documentary, deleted scenes, out-takes, and more. Hitchcock's sublime suspensor, North By Northwest (8/29/00) is being packaged as a special edition by Warner. Screenwriter Ernest Lehman delivers an audio commentary. I can't wait to join Roger Thornhill on the face of Mount Rushmore once again.
