Wow.
When Universal released ten Hitchcock films in one grand gesture in March 2001
it was veritable DVD Nirvana. Each DVD title was accompanied by an excellent documentary. The films are a mixed bag including the color classics Rear Window and The Man Who Knew Too Much and the
chilling Shadow of a Doubt and energetic Saboteur in beautiful black and
white, and the
experimental Rope. There are the two Hitchcock's overpowered by the director's eccentric
humor, The
Trouble with Harry and Family Plot, his bland farewell to films. Topaz delivers some excellent
material while Torn Curtain falls flat on its flabby script. Frenzy approaches some of the best in
Hitchcock but lacks a sympathetic protagonist. All ten reviews are now posted at Films on Disc.
Universal previously released Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds, and
Marnie on DVD. The current bounty of
Hitchcock on DVD includes the ISF Reference DVD North by Northwest from Warner, and
Spellbound, Notorious, Rebecca and The Paradine Case a quartet of Hitchcock black and whites from Anchor
Bay. Criterion has recently released their own versions of Notorious,
Rebecca with Spellbound coming in early 2002, all including
scholarly commentaries. Some of the older Hitchcock's have seen release from various sources.
Jamaica Inn, another of
Hitchcock's Daphne DuMaurier adaptations is available from Image Entertainment. The 39
Steps, the
wonderful template for Hitchcock's later films Saboteur and North by
Northwest, is available in a
very nice special edition from Criterion Collection, and more recently Criterion spiffed up
The
Lady Vanishes with some special edition ingredients. Madacy has released two public domain
Hitchcock's, Sabotage and the first version of The Man Who Knew Too
Much, but don't expect much
from image quality on these.
