Saving Private Ryan
There is no denying the amazing
accomplishment depicting the brutal struggle for possession of
Omaha Beach. The horror of battle has never been replicated with
such thorough attention to horror, blood and
Just as the invasion is an assault on the beach, the film
is an assault on the senses‘ For an unremitting twenty minutes
the water runs with blood, explosions shock soldiers into
private silences creating a surreal pastiche of death,
The
DD transfer presents an interesting look for Saving Private Ryan.
Contrast appears slightly pumped, making the figures in the
foreground stand out slightly. Backgrounds tend to lose their
detail, emphasizing the importance of the individual over the whole.
It’s rather strange in a war film to emphasize the individual, but
that’s what Saving Private Ryan is about, sacrificing many to save
one. Color is strong, yet bleached of gradation. The chromatic
feeling adds to the grittiness of the film. The transfer is
consistently sharp, and light output is powerful. The DTS surround
is nothing short of amazing. Directionality of information is
